Sanguinaria canadensis

Bloodroot

A rhizomatous woodland wildflower that blooms in early spring. Its bright white flowers can have anywhere from 6 to 18 petals. It is NOT safe to use medicinally and should be grown only as an ornamental. TOXIC. Native. Best grown in rich, moist to average soil in the shade. Can be grown under black walnut trees. Named for the orange-red sap in its rootstock.
