Upright grass emerges dark green and gradually turns reddish-purple eventually maturing to near-black leaves in the fall. Summer brings purple blooms with tiny, cream colored seeds. Good for erosion control. Cut back to the ground in late winter just before new shoots appear. Can be slow to emerge from dormancy. Deer resistant and drought tolerant. Native Cultivar. Plant patented.
Performs best in poorer soils. Provides habitats for skipper butterflies and many native birds. 2026 PPA “Plant of the Year”.
